The Income Tax e-filing portal has become an essential platform for taxpayers across India, used for filing returns, viewing tax credits, downloading Form 16, and managing various compliance activities. However, access to this portal is typically secured through One-Time Passwords (OTPs) sent to your registered mobile number. Losing access to that number can create significant challenges, especially during critical filing periods.

Fortunately, the Income Tax Department provides alternative authentication methods and procedures to help taxpayers regain access to their accounts even without receiving OTPs on their registered mobile numbers.

Alternative Login Methods

The Income Tax portal offers multiple authentication options beyond mobile OTP verification. Taxpayers can use their Aadhaar-based authentication if they have linked their Aadhaar number with their PAN. This method sends an OTP to the mobile number registered with UIDAI rather than the one registered on the Income Tax portal.

Another option is using the Electronic Verification Code (EVC) through your net banking account. If you have registered your bank account with the e-filing portal and have active net banking credentials, you can generate an EVC directly from your bank's portal. This method bypasses the need for a mobile OTP entirely.

Using the Portal Without Mobile Access

If you need to access certain sections of the portal that don't require login authentication, you can still perform several functions. Viewing your Tax Credit Statement (Form 26AS) and Annual Information Statement (AIS) is possible through a separate login process that uses your PAN, date of birth, and other verification methods.

Updating Your Mobile Number

The primary challenge when you've lost your registered mobile number is updating it to a new number. The Income Tax Department has established a specific procedure for this situation.

You can visit your jurisdictional Assessing Officer's office with a written request to update your mobile number. You'll need to carry valid identity proof, PAN card, and the new mobile number you wish to register. The officer can manually update your contact details in the system after verification.

Alternatively, you can raise a grievance through the e-filing portal's contact section. While this doesn't require login for initial contact, you may need to provide extensive documentation to prove your identity and ownership of the PAN.

Aadhaar Linking Benefits

Linking your Aadhaar with PAN provides an additional layer of access security. When your Aadhaar is linked, you can opt for Aadhaar-based authentication, which relies on the mobile number registered in your Aadhaar database with UIDAI. If this number is different from your Income Tax portal registration and is still accessible, you can use this route to log in.

Once logged in through Aadhaar authentication, you can navigate to your profile settings and update your registered mobile number to your current contact details.

Digital Signature Certificate Option

For business users and professionals who regularly use the portal, obtaining a Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) provides another authentication method. A DSC allows you to log in without requiring mobile OTP verification. While this involves an initial investment and registration process, it offers long-term convenience and security.

Preventive Measures

To avoid future access issues, consider these preventive steps. Register multiple contact methods including an alternative mobile number and email address. Ensure your Aadhaar is linked with your PAN and that your Aadhaar has an updated mobile number. Consider obtaining a DSC if you're a frequent portal user.

Keep your registered email address active and accessible, as password reset links and certain communications are sent via email. Regularly verify that your contact details are current, especially before the tax filing season.

Immediate Steps After Losing Your Phone

If you've lost your phone, act quickly. If you can retrieve your old SIM card number from your service provider by visiting their office with valid ID proof, do so immediately. Many mobile operators can reissue the same number on a new SIM card.

Simultaneously, begin the process of updating your mobile number with the Income Tax Department through the jurisdictional officer route, as administrative processing may take several days.
