Many taxpayers believe that simply filing their income tax return marks the end of their tax obligations for the year. However, this is a common misconception that can lead to serious complications. The filing process is incomplete without e-verification, and the Income Tax Department allows only 30 days from the date of filing to complete this crucial step.

What Happens If You Skip E-Verification

When you file your ITR but fail to verify it within the stipulated timeframe, the return is considered invalid. The Income Tax Department will not process your return, which means you will not receive any tax refund you may be entitled to. Additionally, an unverified return is treated as if no return was filed at all, potentially making you liable for penalties and interest under Sections 234A, 234B, and 234C of the Income Tax Act.

Beyond monetary penalties, an invalid ITR can create complications if you need income proof for loan applications, visa processing, or other official purposes. Banks and financial institutions typically require processed ITRs, and an unverified return will not serve this purpose.

Why The 30-Day Window Matters

The Income Tax Department has set the 30-day deadline to streamline processing and maintain efficient record-keeping. This timeframe ensures that returns are validated promptly and refunds can be processed without unnecessary delays. Missing this window means your entire filing effort goes to waste, and you may need to file a belated or revised return, depending on whether the original due date has passed.

The verification process is essentially your digital signature confirming that the information submitted in your return is accurate and submitted by you. Without this authentication, the department cannot accept your return as valid.

Multiple Methods For E-Verification

The Income Tax Department offers several convenient methods to verify your ITR, making it accessible for all taxpayers regardless of their technical proficiency or location.

  • Aadhaar OTP: The quickest method where a one-time password is sent to your registered mobile number linked with Aadhaar
  • Net Banking: Verify through your bank account by logging into internet banking of select banks
  • Bank Account Validation: Pre-validate your bank account to enable instant verification
  • Demat Account: Use your demat account number for verification if you have one
  • Bank ATM: Generate an Electronic Verification Code from ATMs of select banks
  • Sending ITR-V: Download and send the signed physical copy to CPC Bangalore via ordinary post

Step-By-Step E-Verification Process Using Aadhaar OTP

The Aadhaar OTP method is the most popular due to its simplicity and speed. First, log into the income tax e-filing portal using your credentials. Navigate to the e-File section and select Income Tax Return. Click on View Filed Returns to see your submitted returns.

Locate the return you wish to verify and click on the e-Verify option next to it. Select Aadhaar OTP as your verification method. Ensure your mobile number registered with Aadhaar is active and accessible. Click on Generate Aadhaar OTP.

You will receive a six-digit OTP on your registered mobile number within a few minutes. Enter this OTP in the designated field on the portal and click Submit. Once validated, your ITR will be successfully verified, and you will receive a confirmation message on your registered email and mobile number.

Using Net Banking For Verification

If you prefer net banking, log into the e-filing portal and follow the same initial steps to reach the verification page. Select the net banking option and choose your bank from the list of participating banks. You will be redirected to your bank's net banking portal.

Log in using your net banking credentials. Locate the e-filing or tax payment section within your banking portal. Follow the prompts to confirm ITR verification. Once completed, you will be redirected back to the income tax portal with confirmation of successful verification.

What To Do If You Miss The 30-Day Deadline

If you have crossed the 30-day verification window, your original return becomes invalid. You will need to file a revised return if you are still within the original due date or assessment year deadline. However, if the original due date has passed, you may need to file a belated return, which could attract late filing fees and interest.

To avoid such situations, set reminders immediately after filing your ITR. Check your email for the acknowledgement message, which contains the ITR-V form and information about verification. Most tax filing platforms also send regular reminders about pending verifications.

Checking Your Verification Status

After completing e-verification, allow 24 to 48 hours for the system to update. You can check the status by logging into the e-filing portal and viewing your filed returns. A successfully verified return will show the status as ITR Verified. You should also receive an email confirmation from the Income Tax Department.
